How to pick your 9 PS1 games

The PlayStation came out in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in the West, and its library leans on what CDs made possible: pre-rendered backgrounds, full-motion video and real soundtracks. Final Fantasy VII shipped on three discs. Four shelves to start from:

Square's run

Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story all came out between 1997 and 2000. Plenty of PS1 grids could be filled from this shelf alone.

Mascots

Crash Bandicoot and Crash Team Racing, Spyro the Dragon, Ape Escape, which needed the DualShock sticks, Klonoa, MediEvil and Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee.

Tank-control horror

Resident Evil 2 and 3, Silent Hill and Dino Crisis. Fixed cameras, limited saves and a lot of backtracking, and that is how people remember them.

Games that lived in the console

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, Driver and Twisted Metal 2. Add Digimon World or Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories if you were the right age for them.

Many of these were remade later. The list sticks to the PS1 originals; if the remake is the one you played, search for it with All platforms.

Should I pick the PS1 original or the remake?

Pick the one you actually played. This list only has originals. To add Final Fantasy VII Remake, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 or Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, switch the search to All platforms.

I played these as PSone Classics on a PSP or PS3. Do they count?

They are the same games, so add them here. With PS1 only, the search finds them under their original PS1 release.

Can my grid have three Final Fantasy games?

Yes. There is no limit per series. Some people allow one game per series to force harder choices, but that is your call.
